When to wear a mask or face cover

The wearing of a mask or face covering covering the nose and mouth is compulsory in public transport (bus, metro, ferries, taxis, valet services, etc.) for people 12 years and older.

From July 18, the wearing of a mask or face covering covering the nose and mouth is also compulsory in closed or partially covered public places for people 12 years and older. This obligation, with some exceptions, will apply to the following places:

    a retail business;
    a service business;
    a private professional practice;
    a place where municipal or government services are offered;
    a personal care business (e.g. hairdressers, beauty care);
    A mall;
    a place of worship;
    a place where cultural or entertainment activities or services are offered (eg, cinema, performance hall, etc.);
    a rental room or other place used to host events, such as conventions and conferences;
    a place where sports or recreational activities are practiced;
    a restaurant or bar;
    a common area, including an elevator, of a tourist accommodation establishment;
    an educational establishment (with the exception of pre-school, primary and secondary schools), including a college or university;
    a train or bus station, a river station, a metro station or an airport.

It is also compulsory to wear a mask or face cover to enter or move around an entrance hall, reception area or elevator of a building other than an apartment building.

Wearing a visor cannot replace the mask or face cover in places where it is mandatory.

People who are in the following situations are not subject to the requirement to wear a mask or face cover:

    children under 12. However, wearing a mask or face cover is recommended for children under 12 and not recommended for those under 2;
    people whose particular medical condition prevents the wearing of a mask or face cover, in particular those who are unable to put it on or remove it by themselves;
    people receiving care, receiving a service, or engaging in physical activity or another activity that requires removal. In these cases, they can remove their mask or face covering for the duration of this treatment, service or activity only;
    people who temporarily remove their mask or face cover for identification purposes;
    people who work or practice their profession in a place that welcomes the public, except when they are in the entrance hall, reception area or elevator of a building other than a residential building . However, these people remain subject to the specific rules applicable to them in terms of occupational health and safety as regards the wearing of a mask or face cover;
    people who are seated and respect the distance provided for the following places (they must put on their mask or face cover when they move in these places):
        in the classrooms of an educational institution,
        in a place where cultural or entertainment activities or services are offered,
        in a restaurant, food court or bar,
        in another closed or partially covered place that welcomes the public where people can be seated.
